CATALOGUE:

This is the process of binding the catalogue – the technique is called I believe ‘perfect binding’.
Once all the sheets have been printed and collated…

They are ‘jogged’ so all the sheets are now even with one another…

They are then placed carefully into a press…

Once secure in the press I use a hack saw to cut a 1 – 2 millimetre line through the margin end of the document to be bound…

Thin pieces of string are then placed inside these lines and the hard block of the document is also scored with a scalpel – PVA glue is then gently, albeit with some gusto(!), brushed over the saw cuts, string and along the length of the document.

I then place a long sheet of gauze along the length of the document and then glued again…

The clamp is then left to dry overnight, in this instance watched by my cat who is banished from the house when there’s glue around and things she can unintentionally destroy…

The following day the clamp is unscrewed and the document released; the glue hardened and hopefully imbedded and keeping the pages together. The backing boards are removed with a pallet knife…

The ends are neatened up and then a quick smoothing down with sandpaper…

Followed by gaffa tape being attached to the end to cover any messy parts and to keep the heavy covers from gradually coming off!

The binding then should be tight, but not too tight that there is no give (the PVA glue is firm but also allows some flexibility)…

The catalogue is then complete and should last many years of use.
