CEREDIGION: A LANDSCAPE OF RUINS & VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE:

These are photographs of old ‘Wild Wales’; its varied landscapes and ruins that scatter its green hills and valleys, its highways and byways, primarily throughout the county of Ceredigion. Ceredigion being my home, my greatest inspiration and thus has enough in its borders to keep me occupied as a photographer.

There is growing interest and concern about the smaller dwellings that scatter Ceredigion. Perhaps once considered slight and unobvious these types of vernacular architecture (such as small cottages and up to large farmhouses, corrugated iron buildings, 1920’s garage and workshop facades, barns and outbuildings) are now being seen as an equal architectural and social importance than the larger and more elaborate houses and properties.

The landscape itself reveals explicit visual records of former industries, particularly mining areas such as Cwmystwyth, Cwmsymlog and Cwmrheidol as well as scores of other smaller workings, have all had a profound influence on the landscape of Wales. Driving through Cwmyswyth lead mines one can not help but be moved by the grey slag heaps and stone ruins, the surrounding steep hills cut with deep seams and open caverns, the veins and scars of extensive and well trodden workings.

And at all times the open Cambrian Mountains can be viewed in the distance, without great peaks but with an expanse large enough to keep the mind fresh with belief that there are perhaps still parts untouched or at least rarely visited.

So many times I have found myself off the beaten track with my camera and tripod, high up in the hills of the Cambrian Mountains believing few could have walked these hills before me and then to discover, quite unexpectedly, perhaps beneath a small cluster of Scots’ Pine trees the few barren walls of a shepherd’s dwelling or alongside a mountain stream the remnants of machinery, abandoned and left to rust, once the mining industry had become unprofitable.

Below are some colour snapshots taken throughout the years. They show various types of empty buildings. In many respects all those empty cottages I’ve visited I have, in hindsight, wished I had taken at least one 5x4inch negative of the property. Perhaps I thought at the time they did not warrant the cost of a sheet of film due to their small size or lack of architectural interest; perhaps I considered them unworthy due to the seemingly vast amount of empty buildings that scatter the high and low lands of Ceredigion. Nonetheless these colour images must, for the time being, suffice.

Visiting these cottages is always a pleasure, attempting to work out the layout of the interior and also the exterior, which trees were planted, where the garden would be or even finding the remnants of the ty bach! One can not help but wonder at the lives that former tenants had lived. The small houses of Nant Rhys or Blaen Myherin feel remote even when reached by motorcar yet the postman would deliver and the owners would ride to market each week. Nonetheless, times must have been hard and long stretches during the winter months and heavy snowfall must have meant weeks of solitude. The thought of living in such remoteness thrills and frightens me.

These photographs were almost exclusively shot using a 35mm compact camera and the later ones with a digital compact. There are over two hundred images on this page and therefore may take a few minutes to load. They are also in no particular order but newer images will be found near the top of the page as they are added to the website as soon as they're taken. A few months ago someone emailed me with this information about this partially collapsed cob building which I had presumed to be only used as an agricultural store:

'The "unknown farm building with cob walls!" is called "Derwen Bedwen". It stands by the road between Cnwch-coch and Llanfihangel y creuddin, and was last lived in by a woman named "Marged Lizzie" untill the late sixty's. She had two or three nasty dogs that always chased us as we walked past on the way home from school!'

If anyone has any further information on Marged Lizzie please do get in touch!

The "unknown farm building with cob walls!" is called "Derwen Bedwen". It stands by the road between Cnwch-coch and Llanfihangel y creuddin, and was last lived in by a woman named "Marged Lizzie" untill the late sixty's. She had two or three nasty dogs that always chased us as we walked past on the way home from school!
